The College of Optometrists has encouraged parents to be vigilant about any toys containing lasers this Christmas, with fears raised over their impact on vision.

It warned parents that laser pointers should not be given to children to play with, and that toys containing lasers should only be purchased from reputable retailers.

Lasers are increasingly ubiquitous and can be found in a range of children’s toys. Class 1 lasers, less than 0.39mW strong, are not harmful but some toys have been found to contain much stronger lasers – hundreds of times in some cases – which can be damaging to the eyes.
