International optometry students could regain the right to complete their pre-registration year in the UK thanks to an application by the College of Optometrists.
The College said it would be applying for a licence from the UK Border Agency to issue Certificates of Sponsorship for migrant pre-registration trainee optometrists.
It followed changes implemented by the UK Border Agency preventing non EEA-international graduates from completing their pre-registration period.
The rules, already due to affect current final year international students, demand overseas graduates return to their country rather than seeking employment in the UK, the College said.
Jackie Martin, director of education at the College, said: 'In our discussions with UK universities, it became clear that an urgent solution was needed to mitigate the impact of recent changes to the UK Border Agency rules.'
