College releases guidance for managing measles

New guidance for managing measles in optometric settings was released by the College of Optometrists in light of news alerts of outbreaks across the UK.

The College advised members to read its guidance, follow advice from their local public health team and to note that measles is a notifiable condition.

It said it was vital for practices to implement transmission-based precautions when providing eye care to people with measles to minimise risk to teams and patients.

In line with guidelines issued by local NHS public health authorities, the latest advice built on its existing guidance on managing patients with symptoms of respiratory infection.

Guidelines included encouraging symptomatic patients to postpone appointments unless in cases of emergency, carrying out practice-based risk assessments, hand hygiene and wearing PPE.

Measles, which is spread via droplet and airborne particles, is the most infectious of all diseases transmitted through the respiratory route, according to The College.
