College revises diploma affixes

The College of Optometrists has altered the affixes to four diplomas. After consultation with the profession and public bodies, it has agreed the following affixes:

Dip CLP - Diploma in Contact Lens Practice - Dip Orth - Diploma in Orthopics - Dip OC - Diploma in Ocular Conditions - Dip Tp - Diploma in Therapeutics. Those who already use affixes for the Diploma in Contact Lens Practice and in Orthoptics may continue to use the old affixes. But it is hoped that all diplomates will adhere to the new standard in time. Geoff Roberson, chairman of the academic committee, said: 'One of the aims of the consultation process was to choose affixes that were acceptable to the profession and recognisable to the public.' The use of 'Dip' to denote qualification of a diploma is quite commonly used and so should fulfil that criteria. Ms Bichard, who was presented with her award by Channel 4 newsreader Jon Snow, has been recognised for her efforts in launching View, the company's customer magazine. The awards' judges said that she had created a magazine which, while looking like a mainstream title, effectively and powerfully promoted the Specsavers' brand. Ms Bichard commented: 'We are delighted with the award - especially as we have published only two magazines to date. We researched the concept thoroughly with our customers before launching last autumn and this has obviously paid off.'
