College to host CET event at April AGM

The College of Optometrists has released details of its Diploma presentation and annual general meeting.

The Diploma presentation, will take place at London's Guildhall on January 24 (2.45pm start) is expected to attract 900 people. The ceremony provides an opportunity to introduce new members to the College and marks individuals' formal entry into the profession. College secretary, Peter Leigh, said: 'Over the past six years the College has built the ceremony into a fitting celebration of professional qualification.' The College agm will take place on April 2 at the Jarvis International Hotel in Bristol. The event will be combined with a CET day including the biennial George Giles lecture. Speakers include Professor Roger Anderson on 'The Glaucomatous optic disc' and Roger Gray on 'Photo-dynamic therapy of macular degeneration'. Attendance to the agm and the Giles lecture is free to members, but they will be charged &\#163;45 to participate in the CET programme (non-members &\#163;125). College president Richard Broughton said: 'We believe we are providing an exciting programme at very low cost, including the College's prestigious lecture, and the opportunity for local members to contribute to the College deliberations.' - The next College confer-ence is due to take place in November 2002. DTI campaigns for firework safety Our picture, illustrating a teenage boy's eye injury that can be caused by a firework, is one of two hard-hitting posters the Department of Trade and Industry has produced in the run-up to Bonfire Night. The posters will appear nationwide from October 23 on 500 Adshell sites donated to optical charity Fight for Sight, which is associated with this year's campaign to make people heed the Firework Code. The campaign is being supported by Asda and DIY group Homebase.
