Owner of eyewear brand Italia Independent reportedly arrested in New York
The owner of eyewear brand Italia Independent has been arrested in New York on suspicion of making a false claim that he was kidnapped.
Lapo Elkann, an Italian fashion designer and heir to the Fiat group, was arrested after police officers were called to a public housing complex in the Kips Bay area of Manhattan.
A report in The New York Times claimed Elkann was at an apartment more by choice, having spent the weekend binging on cocaine, marijuana and alcohol in the company of a transgender escort.
It was reported that Elkann had run out of money and contacted family in Italy to arrange for a cash drop in exchange for his safe return.
