Assessments in the first year of US health programme InfantSEE show that one in 20 babies were found to be at risk for an abnormal prescription and optometrists found an 'overall need for concern' in one in 14 infants.
In the first year of the campaign, 50,000 infants have been seen, and the American Optometric Association analysed 10 per cent of the results.
The programme is supported by former President Jimmy Carter and under it optometrists provide a one-time comprehensive eye assessment to infants in the first year of life, offering early detection of potential eye and vision problems at no cost, regardless of income.
