Diabetes UK has expressed concern at findings that 11 per cent of diabetics were not being screened for retinopathy each year.
The result was found as part of a wider online study by Diabetes UK to coincide with World Diabetes Day on November 14.
Gavin Terry, Diabetes UK policy manager, said: 'Diabetes is the leading cause of blindness in people of working age in the UK and over 1,200 people with diabetes go blind due to diabetic retinopathy each year. It is vital people with diabetes receive an annual eye test to screen for signs of retinopathy to prevent them from developing this devastating complication.
