There is growing concern among practitioners who have received their new GOS contract about the long-term implications of some of the clauses in the legally binding agreement and their lack of input in the final contract agreed by the optical bodies.

From August 1 the current system will be replaced by contracts with PCTs for practices who provide GOS in their areas and PCT ophthalmic performers lists for optometrists and OMPs who carry out GOS sight tests. Under the new arrangements, being on one PCT list allows the contactor to perform general ophthalmic services in any PCT in England.

The revised timetable and guidance have been published jointly by ABDO, FODO, the AOP and the British Medical Association, and outline significant changes and action points for optometrists.
