Contact lens solutions under test

A study published in this month’s Ophthalmic and Physiological Optics (OPO, vol 26, p476) compared the cytotoxicity and the antimicrobial activity of six leading multipurpose soft contact lens solutions.

A study published in this month’s Ophthalmic and Physiological Optics (OPO, vol 26, p476) compared the cytotoxicity and the antimicrobial activity of six leading multipurpose soft contact lens solutions.

Using the protocols recommended in ISO 10993-5 for cytotoxicity – the likelihood of the solution damaging normal cells – and ISO 14729 for antimicrobial action, the study found that only two (MeniCare Soft and Complete Moisture Plus) were not cytotoxic at any of the test concentrations.

Of the remaining solutions, the most cytotoxic was ReNu with MoistureLoc, then ReNu MultiPlus, followed by about equal levels for Solo-Care Aqua and Opti-Free Express.
