The contact lens sector recently lost two of its most prominent figures - Newton K Wesley and Dr Robert Koetting.

Wesley was an optometrist and early pioneer of the contact lens. After being told by experts that the keratoconus he suffered from would probably lead to the loss of his sight, he devoted his career to researching and developing contact lenses. Together with George Jessen, Wesley formed the Wesley-Jessen Corporation to develop a new type of contact lens which solved the comfort problems that plagued wearers in the 1940s. Wesley and Jessen eventually developed the plastic lenses known as rigid contact lenses. Wesley marketed the lenses heavily and often featured on TV chat shows of the era with his model, Leo - the contact lens wearing rabbit.
