Contract agreed to reform eye care in Wales

Optometry Wales, the Welsh Government, and NHS Wales set new terms & costs

An agreement has been reached between the Welsh Government, Optometry Wales and NHS Wales for a new optometry contract terms of service and associated financial costs.

The Welsh Government said the contract represented a significant reform of optometry services in Wales and aligned to the commitments set out in A Healthier Wales and The Future Approach for Optometry Services.

Improvements to accessing eye health services in the community and in hospital eye departments would be made to ensure patients received care delivered by the appropriate professional across pathways.

The government added that an increase in clinical services delivered by optometrists in partnership with hospitals would assure NHS Wales delivered equitable, consistent and timely care.
