Research published on silicone hydrogel lens and solution combinations claims to cast doubt over the importance of Andrasko's staining grid and to give a more realistic indication of which SH lens and solution mixtures result in corneal staining.

The paper from the Institute for Eye Research in Sydney studied combinations of J&J's Acuvue Advance and Acuvue Oasys, CIBA Vision's O2Optix and Bausch & Lomb's Purevision with four brands of solutions.

These were CIBA's AOSeptPlus (Clear Care), Aquify (Solocare Aqua) MPS and Alcon's Opti-Free Express and Opti-Free Replenish.

The study, funded by grants from the IER and CIBA, sought to establish solution-induced corneal staining (SICS) over realistic time periods and distinct from corneal staining caused by other phenomena.
