Specsavers founder Dame Mary Perkins has become Britain's first self-made female billionaire according to the Sunday Times Rich List 2011.
The 67-year-old businesswoman who set up the company with her husband Doug now has an estimated fortune of £1.15bn, thanks to the success of the chain. According to the website Thisismoney, Specsavers' now has 1,555 stores across 10 countries, with a 30 per cent share of the market in the UK. The couple's fortune has increased by £340m since last year, when it stood at £810m, boosting their Sunday Times Rich List position from 73 to 56.
