David Schwarz, an optometrist from Holywell in north Wales, has died aged 80 years, following a short illness. Qualifying from Cardiff Technical College in 1950, Schwarz then completed his National Service with the Royal Army Medical Corps where he examined army service personnel before joining his father’s practice in Holywell as a partner. A keen follower of the Welsh rugby team, he worked full-time at the practice and served on the local optical committee. After his youngest son Leo qualified and joined the partnership, Schwarz turned his attention to his humanitarian interests and assisted in the establishment of the Order of Bridgettine Sisters nearby. He was also a committed participant in local government affairs, becoming chairman of Clywd County Council in 1976. He spent 31 years as a magistrate, was the chair of governors for three local schools and served for many years on the education committee for the Diocese of Wrexham. He was awarded an OBE in 1977 and made a Papal Knight of St Gregory. He is survived by his wife Margot, five children and nine grandchildren.
