Menicon has made its Miru 1 day contact lens available through David Thomas contact lenses.

The wafer-thin lens package is made using a special soft foil which features and easy-to-open seal which Menicon claims is much easier than a blister pack to access. The lens is contained within just 0.2ml of buffer fluid creating a package less than 1mm thick. Once opened the lens is presented towards the user on a plastic dispensing platform with the outside of the lens uppermost. This offers of a range of handling and hygiene benefits.

With the lens always being presented front surface first to the user application on the eye easier and reduces contamination from the wearers’ finger. Studies show microbrial contamination from fibres  reduced considerably, said Menicon. Compliance is further enhanced as the case cannot be reused as a makeshift storage case or the buffer solution retained for reuse.

The lens itself is a Hioxifilicon, a highly wettable daily disposable with a water content of 57 per cent, an aspheric design and a handling tint. The lens has a base curve of 8.6 and a diameter of 14.2. For a 3D lens the centre thickness is 0.1mm and is available in corrections down to -10.00D. From an environmental perspective Miru offers dramatically reduced storage and transport volumes and cost, it also reuses plastics where possible including in its flip top re-usable storage case.
