Two optometrists are due to appear before the disciplinary committee of the General Optical Council next week facing separate charges of serious professional misconduct.

Leicester-based Allan Shields is scheduled to appear on Thursday May 26. It is alleged that the optometrist did not perform contact tonometry during a patient's eye examination on June 23 2003. It is also claimed that Shields entered tonometry results on that patient's record card when this test had not been carried out.

A second case, scheduled for the following day involves London optometrist Sam Silver. It is alleged that he issued a GOS3 voucher to different patients on 12 separate occasions between September 2001 and September 2002 in respect of whom he had 'established a prescription for each eye with no spherical element and a cylindrical element of -0.25 dioptres'.

Both cases will take place at the General Dental Council, a short distance from the GOC's Harley Street offices.
