A murder investigation has been launched after the death of dispensing optician Robert Hurdley after a fight broke out in a pub.

It was believed a number of people were involved in an incident at the Don Jon Hotel, Maltby in which 45-year-old Hurdley sustained a serious head injury, according to South Yorkshire Police.

Hurdley was the director of Specsavers in Chesterfield and represented all Specsavers stores in Yorkshire as regional chairman. Naz Hassen, store director from Specsavers in Chesterfield, said: 'The team and the co-director of the Chesterfield store have been devastated by the loss of their much loved and respected director Rob and are finding it very difficult to come to terms with the nature of what has happened. Rob's ability as a director and his witty personal style will be sorely missed, he was an outstanding director, colleague, mentor and friend to all in the store and he always went above and beyond to help everyone he met.'
