Optical Service has categorically denied that it is supplying Visage frames to Glasses direct.co.uk and has instructed its solicitors to contact the cut-price internet supplier regarding breach of copyright. The Cornwall-based frame distributor has issued a statement guaranteeing its customers that 'Optical Service (UK) Ltd do not and would not supply this operation [Glassesdirect.co.uk] directly under any circumstances.' Solicitors representing Optical Service have contacted Tetbury-based Prescription Eyewear, which runs the website, regarding breach of copyright for using images of its Visage frames without consent. As optician went to press, all images of its products had been removed from the Glasses Direct website. Malcolm Eldridge, chairman of Optical Service, said it was currently carrying out 'exhaustive research' to find the company supplying frames to Glasses Direct. 'Once we can locate the source of supply we will have no hesitation in terminating our trading relationship with the intermediate supplier.' Glasses Direct was launched by 21-year-old James Murray Wells (News, August 20 and 27) just over a month ago, and has received nationwide media coverage. Murray Wells had no comment regarding the breach of copyright but he told optician that he was offering people spectacles at prices they could afford, and helping them 'to afford the healthcare solutions that they should be able to'. 'I expected this kind of pressure,' he said. 'What is happening with Optical Service was a mistake of mine, but it will be quickly resolved.' He explained that he wanted to present the public an alternative to the high prices of spectacles found on the high street. 'As far as our suppliers go, we have other suppliers who are almost falling over themselves to supply us. It will only be a matter of hours before we have a full new range.'
