Student dispensing optician Anna Cloake, from Peters Opticians, has used her recovery time from retinal detachment surgery to knit ear protectors for the NHS staff who cared for her.
Cloake underwent scleral buckle surgery after a detached retina was discovered by her colleague, optometrist Gayan Weli.
Unable to study or work due to blurry vision from her eye drops, Cloake decided to thank staff at Addenbrooke’s Hospital by knitting protectors that prevent strain on the ears of staff while they wear face masks.
Cloake said: ‘I go crazy if I’m not productive, so creating something that would help others was just the logical thing to do.
‘I just wanted to help those who helped me. I know from experience how serious a detached retina can be so I can’t thank them enough.’
