The Department of Health (DoH) has ruled out a demand by the Optometric Fees Review Committee (OFRC) for financial support to meet the cost of running a revalidation scheme in the optical sector.
As reported in Optician, (News, January 30), following the agreement of a three-year deal for GOS sight test fees, the OFRC had given the DoH an ultimatum that it will give no consideration to schemes such as revalidation until funding was made available.
At the time, Bob Hughes, the AOP's chief executive and a member of the OFRC negotiating team, told Optician: 'CPD and revalidation will take up a great deal of time. Every other health profession is funded to undertake this work by the DoH. The DoH has to understand that there will be no participation in these schemes by the optical profession unless they are funded. The Department has come up with money for doctors, pharmacists and nurses and they need to come up money for the optical profession.'
