Dispensing opticians and newly qualifieds could pay lower fees to the GOC following a consultation launched last week.

One of the principal issues to be considered is whether DOs and optometrists should pay different fees. However, a potential difference of opinion between ABDO and the AOP is revealed in their responses to the proposals.

ABDO general secretary Sir Anthony Garrett said the Association welcomed the GOC initiative: 'The ABDO Board will now be discussing these proposals and will then make a definitive response. However, we would warmly welcome proposals that would benefit our members. Last year we pressed the GOC over staged payments of fees and are delighted to see this proposal included in the consultation. Similarly, we would welcome proposals which reduce costs to our members.'
