Douglas C Still

Obituaries

Dorset practitioner Douglas C Still died last month after a long battle with illness. Professor Robert Fletcher has written this obituary.

'Over many years Douglas contributed valuable clinical accounts to Optician, describing his approach to a great variety of patients. Many of these records he used as co-author, in the two editions of a recent book on eye examination & refraction. This was designed for the present generation of students and allowed many to benefit from his expertise, vast experience and kindly nature. He was an efficient teacher.

'For many years his committee work for the British Standards committees was most valuable. A little known special distinction was his achievement in obtaining the FSMC (Hons) Diploma. This rare examination involved as great knowledge of optics and instruments as clinical expertise. That combination, as well as the gentle man himself, is a loss for his profession.'
