After suffering serious illness over the past nine years with chronic kidney and heart problems and recently with cancer, Dr Howard Solomons has died.

After suffering serious illness over the past nine years with chronic kidney and heart problems and recently with cancer, Dr Howard Solomons has died.

Having started his career working at his father's practice, Dr Solomons became a lecturer at the Welsh College of Advanced Technology (which became Cardiff University), where he set up the first course in contact lens practice. He joined City University in 1963, lecturing in optometry and visual science for over 25 years. In total he was a practising optometrist for more than 50 years.

In 1974 he was awarded a doctorate for his work on his mathematical analysis of the three-dimensional horopter. During his career he became a fellow of the College of Optometrists and a fellow of the American Academy of Optometry.
