Researchers at Indiana University’s school of optometry said new biomarkers found in the eye could lead to improved management of diabetic retinopathy.
A study found diabetes-related changes in the eyes could now be measured earlier than previously thought by using retinal imaging and artificial intelligence.
Study lead, Professor Ann E. Elsner at Indiana University, said: ‘Early detection of retinal damage from diabetes is possible to obtain with painless methods and might help identify undiagnosed patients early enough to diminish the consequences of uncontrolled diabetes.’
Researchers explained that their new algorithm could provide early information localised to specific retinal layers or types of tissues.
