General Optical Council discusses next steps for its education review

The General Optical Council met in London last week to discuss the next steps for its education review – with a summary of responses now due in July.

Submissions were received from over 50 stakeholders in response to the call for evidence, including from 17 registrants and 16 education and training providers.

Speaking at the regulator’s quarterly meeting this week, council member David Parkins said: ‘How we move this into a workplan is very important. The capacity issues in the hospital eye departments are real.

‘My only challenge is whether some of the responses have gone far enough in the ambitions that the optical sector can aim at. We need to get to the stage where more of the profession is making clinical decisions on a daily basis.’
