EIS drives home message on fees

A news item appeared in the November 17 issue of optician entitled 'Multiple wipes money off drivers' sight test', which implies that the Eyecare Information Service supports discounted eye examination fees for drivers. This is not the case. On the contrary, the EIS has always promoted the fact that current average eye examination fees represent excellent value for half-an-hour of a professional's time and experience; any reduction or discounting of fees would make it extremely difficult for independent practitioners to compete with the major multiples, thus restricting the choice that presently exists in the marketplace - to the ultimate disadvantage of all patients.

It seems that the story resulted from press information released by Boots and Halfords who are currently running a joint promotion aimed at drivers. I understand that drivers who buy wiper blades at Halfords receive discount vouchers for an eye examination at Boots Opticians. Last year the EIS carried out basic research that suggested a frightening percentage of drivers were unable even to comply with the basic sight test that comprises part of the driving test. As a result, the EIS is hoping to commission new research designed to provide statistics that will challenge the view currently held by the majority of Britain's police forces that there is no proven link between drivers with sub-standard vision and the incidence of road accidents. The EIS is currently seeking sponsorship for this research and a discussion about it took place with representatives of Halfords. The EIS made it clear that it supports the need for drivers to have regular eye examinations, but the EIS has never pledged support for discounted eye examination fees. While it is gratifying to note the value that major retailers clearly place on EIS support for their campaigns, I think it is important that everyone should understand the true EIS position on this matter.
