Patient thanks practice for saving his life

A 94-year-old patient has written to Enhanced Optical Services in St Albans thanking the practice for saving his life after a referral led to an operation to clear a blocked artery.

Kenneth Saph, who has only had vision in one eye since he was a child, attended EOS in late August complaining of temporary loss of vision in his one good eye.

Following examination the optometrist referred Saph for possible amaurosis fugax. His GP referred him directly to hospital where a scan revealed a large fatty deposit in his carotid artery.

The hospital removed it three days later and informed him that without treatment he was about to have a massive stroke which could have killed him. He later wrote to the practice commenting ‘you saved my life’.
