Optics could be becoming a 'second income profession' warned British Association of Dispensing Opticians general secretary Sir Tony Garret as he urged employers always to ensure equal salaries based on equal responsibilities and experience.

Garrett was commenting on the findings of the Women of Vision survey, conducted by Optician and CIBA Vision, which found that women earn less than men both in actual salaries and pro rata, and are less likely to hold managerial positions (News 22.10.10).

Garrett said ABDO now had a majority of female members and fully supported their equal opportunities and career development. But he told Optician: 'Noting the trends in the survey it could be construed that optics may be becoming a second income rather than a primary income profession.'

ABDO offers its members a 'return to work' package aimed at those returning to practice after maternity leave or caring for the elderly. It also recently appointed its second female president, and has two other women on its board. 'This clearly indicates a move towards greater female representation at the highest level of the organisation,' said Garrett.
