Essilor factors in protection

Essilor claims that two-thirds of the public are unaware that clear lenses can offer protection against ultra-violet and that nine out of 10 people recognised the need for a UV protection index for eyewear.

Essilor has developed an Eye-Sun Protection Factor (E-SPF) system similar to that used for sun creams. The French lens giant says the numbering system, from 2 to 25 for clear lenses and 50+ for tinted and polarised products, will improve consumer knowledge about visual health and the dangers of UV radiation.

Essilor recently launched its Crizal UV lenses which provide the best protection of any clear lens by offering UV blocking for back surface reflections.
