A new facility in China has been established by Wenzhou Medical University and Essilor International to further myopia research.

The Wenzhou Medical University-Essilor International Research Center was described as a long-term partnership and will initially concentrate on myopia in children and the use of ophthalmic lenses to control its progression. Essilor said it had a longstanding relationship with the university, having worked on a variety of research projects over the past 10 years.

‘Partnering with leading research organisations throughout the world is a key lever of Essilor’s research and innovation strategy,’ said Eric Perrier, vice-president worldwide R&D at Essilor.

‘Considering the impact of myopia on people’s lives, it is our responsibility, as the worldwide leader in ophthalmic optics, to contribute actively to investigating myopia’s causes and ways to fight this disorder, together with leading scientists,’ he added.

The group is also involved in the REAP – Rural Education Action Project study to examine the link between vision correction and school success in China.
