Glaucoma UK has awarded Cardiff and Vale University Health Board and IT digitisation consultant Gareth Bulpin its top prize for excellence in glaucoma care.
Bulpin worked with the health board to develop an electronic patient record and referral system for eye care in response to the pandemic.
It enabled optometrists with additional glaucoma qualifications to assess glaucoma patients, then upload eye images and results to the electronic patient record within a secure NHS network. The record could then be viewed by a hospital consultant who made a decision on next steps for the patient’s care.
Bulpin, who lost sight in his left eye after a stroke, came out of retirement to work on this project and improve the experiences of other patients.
