A South Carolina woman has been sentenced to 25 years for murder

A woman in South Carolina, US has been sentenced to 25 years in prison after killing her husband by adding eye drops to his water.

Over a three-day period, 53-year-old Lana Sue Clayton added enough eye drops to 64-year-old Stephen Clayton’s water for the active ingredient, tetrahydrozoline, to kill him.

The New York Times reports that Ms Clayton admitted administering the poison to her husband at their home in Clover from July 19 to July 21 2018.

Ms Clayton used Johnson & Johnson’s Visine eye drops, which are noted by the US Food and Drug Administration as safe to use in the eyes as directed but can cause serious and life-threatening effects if ingested.
