Eye safety highlighted ahead of bonfire night

The College has issued advice about eye safety on bonfire night

A warning about the safety risks to eye health on bonfire night has been made by the College of Optometrists because it expects at home firework displays to increase in lockdown.

The College noted that around 10 people a year lose their sight due to fireworks, with almost 2000 A&E firework-related attendances in 2018/2019.

It recommended the use of protective eyewear while handling, lighting or in close proximity to fireworks, as well as lighting fireworks at an arm’s length to avoid sparks as it launches.

Daniel Hardiman-McCartney, clinical adviser at the College of Optometrists, said: ‘It is vital that people consider the safety of both themselves and their family this bonfire night. If you are using fireworks at home, remember to wear safety googles and follow the firework code.
