To open the meeting, Sikander Sidiki (Glasgow) and Stephen McPherson (Aberdeen) gave a dual presentation on the glaucomas and shared care management. They gave an overview of the range of ocular conditions suitable to formalised monitoring in the community rather than a hospital setting, pointing out that we as optometrists are armed with the skills required and are often best placed to monitor these patients.

David Yorkston (Glasgow Royal Infirmary) emphasised the importance of Shafer's sign in the differential diagnosis of posterior vitreous detachment and retinal detachment. Susmito Biswas (paediatric ophthalmologist at Manchester Royal Infirmary) covered the genetic basis of inherited diseases and discussed how, clinically, we can diagnose these patients using a thorough history and symptoms, clinical signs and additional tests as well as how to manage these patients and which referral pathway is appropriate.
