France tops projected AMD rates

France has the highest projected rate of diagnosed age-related macular degeneration (AMD) cases worldwide, forecasted to rise by 28.95% in the next decade, according to a new report.

The latest GlobalData report, Age-Related Macular Degeneration Epidemiology Analysis and Forecast, 2021-2031, revealed that cases are expected to grow from 33.6 million in 2021 to 40.32 million in 2031 among the seven major markets, including the US, Germany, France, Italy, Spain, UK and Japan.

Overall, France held the highest annual growth rate at 2.89%, followed by Spain (2.85%) and the UK (2.16%).

The main factors influencing the growth in AMD are said to be attributed to advancing age, cigarette smoking, diabetes, family history, and cataract surgery.
