Research published this week in the Journal of Epidemiology and Community Health (2004, 58, 1021-1027) implies that there is a link between significant computer use and the presentation of glaucomatous field loss, writes clinical editor Bill Harvey. The study assessed 10,272 'randomly' selected Japanese computer workers and assessed their fields using frequency doubling perimetry (FDT-VFA). The sample was primarily middle-aged and male and the results suggest that there is a significant association between field loss and myopia (already recognised as a predisposing factor in glaucoma development) while there was no significant predisposition to glaucoma in those workers without refractive error. An indirect association related to the possible implications for myopic development related to prolonged nearwork, such as computer use cannot be ruled out, however.
