A research project to develop a simple test for detecting glaucoma involving a collaboration by Moorfields Eye Hospital, City University London and UCL has been selected for the Big Ideas for the Future report.
Published by Research Councils UK and Universities UK, the report selects important projects across UK universities. Under development since 1999, the Moorfields Motion Displacement Test (MMDT) is a software program that provides a field of vision test.
Senior research fellow Dr Gay Mary Verdon-Roe said: 'The MMDT is a good example of translational research, where universities work together to improve the standard of care to patients.'
David Crabb, professor of statistics and vision research at City, said the collaboration had involved a remarkable combination of visual scientists, ophthalmologists and mathematicians. 'It is an excellent example of different groups in different universities working with the NHS to translate an idea into something that might have a significant health impact.'
