A major survey of eye care professionals has revealed considerable variation among practitioners about the nature of biocompatibility, corneal staining and risk factors for contact lens complications.

The survey of 1,229 practitioners (60 from Australia, New Zealand, and Asia Pacific, 19 from the Middle East and Africa, 398 from the UK and Europe and 752 from the US) was conducted by Optician on behalf of BioScience.

Over 60 per cent of respondents when asked what biocompatibility meant in the context of contact lenses and lens care products gave the answer 'maintenance of corneal cell integrity and wettability'.

More than half felt that lens and solution interactions, oxygen permeability and fluorescein staining were all related. Fewer than half felt inflammation to be linked with biocompatibility and around 5 per cent admitted to not knowing what biocompatibility was.
