GOC awaits verdict of regulators' regulator

Optical regulation is likely to escape major changes in the wake of the review being undertaken by the regulators' regulator, the CHRE.

In her report to the General Optical Council last week, registrar and chief executive Samantha Peters said the Commission for Healthcare Regulatory Excellence would be circulating its proposals to the Council for recruitment, appointments and related matters shortly.

The Department of Health has asked for this work to be done to ensure all regulators have appropriate standards in the run up to the abolition of the Appointments Commission. The CHRE is also undertaking work for the DoH to gain more efficiencies from regulators. This is expected to require smaller numbers and more streamlined processes within healthcare regulation.
