Halloween revellers have been warned about the risks of wearing cosmetic contact lenses by the General Optical Council.
Amid growing popularity, the GOC said young people were known to share cosmetic contact lenses – leading to an increased risk of serious problems occurring including corneal ulcers and infections that can lead to vision impairment.
Such products, readily available online, at novelty shops and market stalls, were more popular than ever on the back of TV programmes Vampire Diaries and Twilight, it was noted.
However, the GOC stressed that the law stated cosmetic lenses must be dispensed in the presence of an optician or medical practitioner.
