GOC lifts suspension

A General Optical Council (GOC) fitness to practise committee review hearing has ruled student Syed Shah may once again undertake training as a dispensing optician.

Shah was suspended for 12 months in July 2011 after the GOC proved he treated patients while unqualified over a period of some 16 months between September 2008 and December 2009.

The registrant gave evidence at the review hearing and was questioned over his actions and whether he understood the seriousness of his dishonest conduct. The committee said it was satisfied Shah had demonstrated insight into his actions and noted the positive nature of the testimonials he had received from his employers.
