GOC looks to public in new business plans

Regulation

Details of the General Optical Council's 2012/13 business plan were outlined at a quarterly meeting held last week.

The regulator revealed a number of new, enhanced strategic aims for this financial year - based on the analysis and progress of last year's aims.

How the Council interacts with the public and the development of public awareness were both addressed with new proposals. The GOC said it would aim to ensure visibility, accessibility and responsiveness to the public at point of need. These aims would be facilitated by modernising web accessibility and functionality, taking a collaborative approach to communication of issues and mapping and monitoring its public access channels.

The GOC said it would consider its aims to be successful when members of the public had clear and easy access to the GOC when and where necessary.

Samantha Peters, chief executive of the GOC, said: 'We have performed well against the standards set by the Council for Healthcare Regulatory Excellence (CHRE) in the first strategic plan year and intend to continue its focus on improvement of both effectiveness and efficiency in delivering safe, proportionate, transparent and fair public protection.'

The GOC also considered its response to the Law Commission review, which has proposed a single over-arching statute to cover the UK's health regulators. The regulator said it would respond to the consultation and encouraged its stakeholders in optics and the wider public to do the same. Responses must be submitted by May 31.
