GOC members block registration fee rise

Opposition to plans for a £5 increase in the 2013-14 registration fee has caused the General Optical Council to freeze the figure at £260.

A draft budget set for approval by Council members last week had planned to increase the fee by 1.9 per cent. The new fee, described in the draft plans as having a 'cost of living increase,' was opposed by members, who questioned both its size and timing. A plan for a £3 increase to the low income fee, introduced last year, was also shelved and the amount will remain at £160.

GOC chief executive and registrar Samantha Peters said: 'We have been working hard over the last three years to improve our efficiency and make the best possible use of resources.
