Only optometrists should carry out refraction as part of the sight test, the General Optical Council has stressed amid fresh calls for dispensing opticians to win the right to refract.
'In response to a number of enquiries from registrants about refraction following recent press articles, we wish to remind registrants of the restrictions surrounding the testing of sight,' a statement by the GOC said this week.
It was in response to renewed calls from Peter Black, president of the Association of British Dispensing Opticians, for independent dispensing rights for DOs (News 26.04.13).
The GOC stressed refraction for the purpose of issuing a prescription was an essential part of the sight test under the Optician Act, but should only be conducted by an optometrist or registered medical practitioner.
