GOC register exclusions rise again

The General Optical Council has erased 465 names from The Opticians Register - 65 more than last summer's erasure order - due to failure to pay registration retention fees.

A breakdown of struck-off entries shows that 229 optometrists, 214 dispensing opticians and 22 corporate bodies have been erased from the register. This compares to last year when 197 optometrists, 181 dispensing opticians and 22 corporate bodies were erased (News, June 19, 1998). Renewal notices were sent in February this year, followed by reminders to those who did not pay at the end of April. Companies that failed to renew, and are now erased from the register, could face a fine of &\#163;2,500 if they continue to practise.
