GOC suspends West Midlands optometrist

A four month suspension was given by the GOC fitness to practise committee

West Midlands-based optometrist, Mohammed Nawaz, has been suspended for four months after a General Optical Council (GOC) fitness to practise panel found him guilty of misconduct.

The GOC ruled that Nawaz was impaired by reason of misconduct, in relation to dishonest record keeping and failure to maintain adequate records.

The committee said this ‘involved dishonest completion of student assessment records for two patients and multiple record keeping errors in relation to other patients... and the Registrant’s dishonest conduct had the potential to undermine the integrity of the scheme for assessments of students.’

It stated that Nawaz seemingly ‘attempted to take advantage of potential weaknesses in the student assessment system for his own benefit.’
