GOC to withdraw provisional approval for Portsmouth University's optometry course

Portsmouth University fails to improve on warnings issued by the GOC in September

The General Optical Council has issued notice of its intention to withdraw provisional approval for the University of Portsmouth’s Masters of Optometry programme.

In September 2019, the GOC suspended intake of new students to the optometry programme to enable the university to focus resources on addressing outstanding concerns over the quality of the course.

A GOC quality assurance visit in November 2019 found that these concerns had not been sufficiently rectified. Following additional consideration of the visit report on December 5 2019, the Council gave notice of its intention to withdraw provisional approval for the MOptom programme. Portsmouth University now has one month to appeal the decision.
