The GOC is to become smaller and more 'board-like' with a maximum of 13 members to comply with the government's White Paper, Trust, Assurance and Safety, which requires regulatory bodies to become more streamlined.
The decision for a smaller Council received majority support during a GOC Council meeting which took place in London on March 22, despite some members expressing concern that a smaller board may struggle to represent a national membership.
During the meeting, members discussed a number of options on the future make-up of Council to comply with government requirements, including the need for more lay members. If approved, the new-look Council would comprise of at least six lay members.
