Carl Zeiss Vision is the result of the merger between the ophthalmic lens business of Carl Zeiss and the US enterprise Sola. It has a workforce of over 11,000 people and is represented with its own locations in more than 30 countries, making it the world's second largest lens manufacturer.

The company pointed out that under Bishop's leadership the integration of the two companies had progressed successfully, with a 10 per cent increase on revenues for the first six months of the current fiscal year to €426m, over the same period in 2005. The market share of the global player has increased in almost every region.

Dr Gorny joined Carl Zeiss from McKinsey & Co in 1998 and was executive vice president of the Microscopy Business Group.

Bishop will move to the Advisory Board of Carl Zeiss Vision on October 1.
